My setting of this well-loved spiritual uses a quiet piano accompaniment. The piece begins with a counter-melody on the text “Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, kyrie eleison, O Lord, have mercy on me”, which is interspersed and then combined with the traditional African-American spiritual tune.
